EMBARK ON A SUMMER OF ADVENTURE

WITH BROWARD COUNTY LIBRARY

The Library’s annual summer programming kicks off on Saturday, June 1 at the Northwest Regional Library with the Children’s BookFest. Families will enjoy a day with award-winning children’s book authors, entertainers, face painting, fun activities, storytellers, virtual reality experiences, and a Big Book Giveaway! Children and families are encouraged to sign up for the Summer Learning Program at the event to get a head start on earning fun incentives and prizes for reaching their reading goals.

The Summer Learning Program’s theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” Participants will discover interactive art, music and science learning experiences throughout the summer, embarking on 10 weeks of adventure-filled activities and reading challenges for the whole family.

This summer, the Library is piloting two new initiatives. One is a camp-style week of library-themed programs that focus on story crafting, civic engagement, and literature. The “Library Camp” will give participants a hands-on experience in how to get the most out of their library and a preview of what it means to work in the library world. The other is “Countdown to Kindergarten,” a summer-long series of programs designed to help young children and parents with the transition into VPK and Kindergarten.

The Children’s BookFest and Summer Learning Program are underwritten in part by BBX Capital Foundation, JM Family Enterprises, Panera Bread, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, the Charles F. & Esther M. Frye Foundation, the Sylvia K. & Martin J. Yohalem Community Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward, and dedicated supporters of the library, like you. Book With Brunch:

Artist Carol Calicchio

Book With Brunch will return on Thursday, May 30 at 10:30 a.m. with local artist Carol Calicchio and the new collection of her artwork, Flower Power. Authored by art critic Bruce Helander, Flower Power highlights an era of Carol's vibrant and expressionistic paintings.

The artist’s mastery of abstract florals began several years after she earned a degree from the New York School of Interior Design. Carol now lives in Delray Beach and creates her colorful works in a spacious, inspiring studio on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Book With Brunch is sponsored by Belmont Village Senior Living Fort Lauderdale, 1031 Seminole Drive, Fort Lauderdale.

Register for this event online at bplfoundation.org/book-with-brunch or by calling the Foundation office at 954-357-7382. Registration deadline is Friday, May 24.

A Successful 35th Annual Literary Feast

The Broward Public Library Foundation’s annual celebration of books and authors raised more than $160,000 at its two component events, A Night of Literary Feasts and LitLIVE!

The Literary Feast weekend connected hundreds of donors and book lovers with our authors, including James R. Benn, Alex DeMille, Kristin Harmel, Leah Lax, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Thomas Mallon, Aida Rodriguez, Jonathan Santlofer, Lisa Unger, and Michelle Wildgen.

LitLIVE! was held Friday, April 12 at the Horvitz Auditorium at the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale, with authors speaking on three panels. Winning teams that participated in the inaugural Feast for the Mind Reading Challenge were recognized and posed for photos with the authors. On Saturday, April 13, more than 300 guests attended A Night of Literary Feasts’ Welcome Reception at Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach, followed by individual dinners with authors in upscale restaurants and clubs.

Author James Benn described Literary Feast as a “superb celebration for authors, readers, and all those who love libraries.”

The proceeds help support vital Broward County Library programs and services, including free SAT/ACT classes for high school students and children’s literacy festivals.

Alexa Lanier and the late Susie Levan were this year’s Literary Feast Co-Chairs. The event was presented by the Helen Ingham Foundation. Other top supporters included Nova Southeastern University, the Haller Foundation, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., and Ryder System, Inc.

Follow our social media in the coming months for our 2025 event date announcements.

Director's Book Club

Broward County Library Director Allison Grubbs has chosen two thought-provoking titles for her Director’s Book Club this summer. The June title is Danica Roem’s Burn the Page, a memoir by Virginia’s first openly transgender state senator. The July title is best-selling author Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead, a novel that was the co-recipient of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The titles will be discussed both online and at two Broward County library branches. For details on times and locations, as well as upcoming titles, please visit broward.org/Library/Events/Pages/DirectorsBookClub.aspx

It’s In the Bag

Purchase a reusable Community Bag sold during the month of May at the Winn-Dixie store at 901 N. Nob Hill Rd. in Plantation, and in June at Winn-Dixie at 941 Southwest 24th St. in Fort Lauderdale, and BPLF will receive $1 for every $2.99 reusable bag sold. It’s an easy way to be kind to the environment, while showing support of literacy programs.

Scientist in Residence Program

Know a child who is an aspiring scientist? Or do you have a fascination with the field? The North Lauderdale Saraniero Library is launching a new Scientist in Residence Program led by a diverse group of scientists who will provide interactive programming for children ages 5 and older, and for adults, too.

Funded by the Broward Public Library Foundation, the program is designed to provide opportunities for high-quality connected learning activities, mentorship, and community building through citizen science. Two teams of scientists will conduct the programming. The first team is led by Dr. Neymi Mignocchi, program director and founder of Eye of Scientist. Kristen Hoss, the executive director of Youth Environmental Alliance, will lead the second team.

Adult programming begins June 10; children’s programming on June 14. Activities are scheduled to run through September 20.

Mystery Books Have a New Home in Pompano Beach

Creating a family’s legacy is one of the Library Foundation’s greatest honors. We witnessed this recently at the Opening Celebration of the Rubel Family Mystery Collection at the Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center. Guests included Laurence and Howard Rubel, Library Director Allison Grubbs, Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin, Mystery Critic and Reviewer Oline Cogdill and Mystery Authors Charles Todd, Alan Orloff, and Neil S. Plakcy.

The Rubel Family created the Isabel & Stanley Rubel Family Endowment Fund, named after the matriarch and patriarch of the family, as a way to honor their late mother’s passing in 2021. Isabel and Stanley Rubel were long-time residents of Pompano Beach who raised three sons, founded a successful business in the area, and supported their community and local library. As both parents were avid mystery readers, the sons chose to dedicate the fund to building a collection of mystery books to be housed at the Pompano Beach Library.

Along with this new collection, the Fund will also support mystery-themed programs and author talks.

Thank you to the three Rubel sons, Howard, Matthew, and Laurence, for their generosity, along with family and friends across the country who helped fund the Isabel & Stanley Rubel Family Endowment Fund.

The Broward Public Library Foundation has the pleasure of working with the family of the late Isabel & Stanley Rubel to create this endowment fund in their memory. Their three sons Howard, Matthew and Laurence recall their parents' love of mystery novels, which brought them into the Pompano Beach Library regularly. In the creation of the fund, Howard Rubel expressed how his parents “had great vision to see the possibilities of Pompano Beach” and that the family is “delighted to give back to a community that Isabel and Stanley joined over 65 years ago.”
